Typical honey

Known the world over as the "nectar of the Gods", honey for many centuries was the only form of sweetener available before the discovery of America. The first traces of man-made beehives date back eight thousand years. From very ancient times, honey was considered a remedy for preventing or treating diseases.

Sardinia produces honey of various types and excellent quality. Smeralda proposes Cardoon Honey, with a strong decided flavour whose scent recalls the flowers of the Mediterranean countryside; Asphodel Honey, with a delicate, vaguely grassy scent and a taste recalling the perfume of the flower: Orange Honey, pleasantly sour in taste and beneficial in stomach ulcers, also used as a sedative and antispasmodic; Eucalyptus Honey, sweet and intensely scented with antibiotic and anti-asthma properties, excellent to calm coughs; extra-sweet Millefiori, rich and aromatic, excellent for purifying the liver; Strawberry Tree Honey or Bitter Honey, the most characteristic of Sardinia, with extraordinary organoleptic properties and unique scents and flavours — its scent recalls ivy leaves and coffee grounds. It has persistent scent and sweet flavour only at the outset, after which you will note a strong element of bitterness, astringent but never with a burnt flavour. In the island’s culinary tradition it is an essential ingredient for typical sweets and pastries.
